The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) (www.kidney.org), headquartered in New York, was established in 1950 to help victims of kidney disease, and to raise funds for kidney disease research in the U.S. Over the years, NKF has expanded its mission and influence, and is currently globally recognized as a leading authority on kidney disease. NKF’s Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) were the first broadly accepted clinical practice guidelines in nephrology, and are regarded as a treatment standard worldwide, including in China.
In July and August 2009, to promote an international academic exchange between NKF and China’s leading nephrologists, PUMC Pharmaceutical sponsored NKF’s first official visit to China. Over two weeks, PUMC Pharmaceutical and NKF co-hosted a joint colloquium in Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Guangzhou. Agenda highlights included VIP roundtables, hospital and university visits, Q&A sessions and lectures with NKF President, Dr. Bryan Becker, providing the keynote address: The past, present, and the future of guidelines in nephrology—learning from the world, from KDOQI to KDIGO.
